What is wrong with the plastic bag?

Now You Know !

Normal plastic bags, - you know, the kind that you are given in a shop when you buy so much as a box of matches, - are really awful things.  They do not go away. It is said that, -since they were first introduced, only a short time ago, historically speaking, countless millions have been made, used and for the most part, still exist,  unchanged and unchanging in landfills. or blowing about the world causing problems to wildlife and generally making the place look untidy. Given the right circumstances they last about 100 years, maybe longer.

Here in Fujairah they are especially annoying.  Once discarded they fly away in the wind and often attach themselves to the African Thorn Trees that are found wherever there is a patch of soil.  They get blown into the sea, which is more serious, as here they get caught up in fishing nets, boats propellers and  generally pollute the fishing grounds on which many locals depend for their livelihood.

It is one of the most frightening things to experience in the sea too. To have a leg suddenly enveloped in a plastic bag. It has happened to me and I can assure you, I almost had kittens!  Most unpleasant. Goats and camels seem to be able to eat them, although I am sure they do not do any good at all to the digestion.  OK. So we are all agreed then, let's do something about them. But what?

Luckily there is a solution, it will take time and will not take place overnight.  Use Degradable Bags.  Of course, why didn't someone think of this before. Well they have -and they are being manufactured in the Emirates. There is a factory in Musaffah run by Bin Hilal in Abu Dhabi and for some time they have been manufacturing all sorts of bio-degradable plastic bags, made to order and guaranteed not to last for ever, just as long as they are being needed. Once exposed to the outside temperatures, sunlight, being crushed or torn, etc. they go away, on their own. They disintegrate into harmless residue, completely non toxic, consisting of a few chemicals designed not to pollute in any way.

You can order bags with your own logo or message on, bags that are to your own design or purposes, but these cost a bit more.  In fact degradable bags cost a bit more generally, but it is not much and you get a really nice feeling using them and you can advertise that you are doing your bit for the Environment. It's really worth paying a tiny bit more. Don't you think?
